Summary of FSD's accessibility statement

The entire statement is available in Finnish.

This accessibility statement pertains to FSD's main website (www.fsd.tuni.fi) and more indicatively to the services under the domain services.fsd.tuni.fi. FSD's services are subject to the law on the provision of digital services, which requires that public online services must be accessible.

The statement was originally releasead on October 17, 2019 and was last updated on November 15, 2023. The accessibility of online services has been evaluated by FSD's senior specialist Tuomas J. Alaterä and software developer Oskari Niskanen, in collaboration with an external audit body.

Alternative ways of accessing the services

FSD is a digital repository and our services are predominantly accessible online. If you are unable to access the online services, you can call our customer service (+358 29 452 0411) on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Accessibility status of the service

Partially meets the accessibility requirements. Meets the critical accessibility requirements; WCAG criteria 2.1, level A and AA.

Non-accessible content (WCAG)

On the main site, some older images and table content lack alternative descriptions, or content may not have been adequately marked as decorative. There are flaws in the text equivalents of objects and images. In addition, the site has PDF forms that meet accessibility requirements at a basic level, with no alternative options provided.

In other services, contrast ratio optimization is not implemented in all older services, such as Aila and Pohtiva. Form fields or buttonsin Aila are not sufficiently described for assistive technologies, and there are flaws in the heading order in both Aila and Pohtiva. The focus is not always visible.

Using VoiceOver screen reader, the focus may fail to move to the selected element when clicking links in the main menu.

Keyboard navigation has shortcomings in Aila, Pohtiva and certain older parts of the site (see Content not covered by accessibility legislation).

Furthermore, some links open in new windows without clear indication.

Content inaccessible due to unreasonable burden

According to accessibility legislation, a service may exhibit accessibility shortcomings if rectifying them would pose an unreasonable burden on the service administrator. FSD has identified the following issues:

  • Aila relies on outdated technology that FSD no longer utilises for service development. Aila is slated for renewal between 2023 and 2025.
  • The search functionality of the main site employs Google Custom Search, which is not fully accessible. Corresponding search results can be reached in a more accessible manner with standard Google search by utilising standard Google search and appending site:.fsd.tuni.fi to the search query.

Content exempt from accessibility legislation

  • There are PDF files (publications or seminar presentations) that were published before September 23, 2018. These are exempt from accessibility requirements if they don't pertain to customer rights or obligations and have been published before September 23, 2018.
  • Our YouTube channel has videos that lack Finnish subtitles or audio descriptions. These have been published before September 23, 2020. The accessibility requirements do not apply to videos published before September 23, 2020.
  • Our website has archived content, such as news bulletins, event websites, articles and publications. Content is not subject to accessibility regulations if they were produced before September 23, 2019, and have been archived and are not updated. When possible, we strive to apply general accessibility improvements to these materials as well.

We are constantly improving the accessibility of our online services

Our central online services have been subject to an accessibility assessment on October 12, 2020.

We will update this statement when we correct any of the shortcomings identified.

We support accessibility as follows:

  • Accessibility requirements are taken into account in the development of new services and the further development of old ones.
  • We invest in the accessibility skills of our employees.
  • We strive to produce clear, good-quality, and understandable language for our target community.
  • We invest in accessibility assessments when developing our key services.
  • We produce our PDF documents as accessible or provide the corresponding content in an accessible format.
  • Infographic content not explained in the main text are described on a separate description page in text or table format.

Accessibility enhancements are integrated into our regular content production and technical website development processes. Even our older websites and services were created in strict adherence to HTML standards of their time. They may not, however, fully take accessibility into account.

We offer support to users for whom our digital services are not accessible.

In all cases concerning accessibility, you can contact FSD's communications either by e-mail fsd (at) tuni.fi or by phone +358 40 190 1441.
